Special learning opportunities that combine arts with science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) have been launched by UNBOXED: Creativity in the UK for the summer term.

The unique schools and colleges programme that puts creativity and collaboration at the heart of learning, inspired by real-world examples, is from UNBOXED, the once-in-a-lifetime celebration of creativity, taking place across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and online from March to October 2022.

Launched so far this summer are opportunities to:

  • Take a school guided tour of Our Place in Space, an epic three-dimensional sculpture trail designed by artist Oliver Jeffers and astrophysicist Professor Stephen Smartt. This trail is in Derry~Londonderry, moving to Belfast in June and the Ulster Transport Museum & North Down Coastal Path in September. Download free learning resources on Life in the Universe, the Solar System and Planet Earth for pupils aged 8 to 11 years. Take part in creative challenges with astronauts, musicians and artists. Plus, arrange a free in-class workshop for primary (4-11) and post-primary (11-16) and immerse your class with our free augmented reality app! Find out more with Our Place in Space Learning.
  • Take part in Dreamachine’s Life’s Big Questions, an interactive exploration of the amazing potential of the human brain, hosted by Martin Dougan (CBBC Newsround). Children, aged 7 to 11 years, will take part in creative investigations to inspire intrigue about how we experience the world. They will then be invited to share their results through a national survey and see how their answers compare with those of children across the UK. Find out more with Life’s Big Questions from Dreamachine.
  • Enter a poetry and Scratch coding competition for pupils aged 4 to 18, to win books, tech goodie, talent development opportunities and free school workshops. The About Us project combines poetry and science as it explores the many ways life across the universe is connected. Find out more with the About Us Learning Resources and About Us Competition.

The learning opportunities are based on the ten creative projects commissioned by UNBOXED. These projects include an offshore rig being transformed into a SEE MONSTER, a bio-diverse forest in a city centre and a way of imagining, together, a more positive 2025. UNBOXED will be publishing its new resources and opportunities through until October.
